History and Mission
Founded on December 8, 1988, Rainforest Trust is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the purchase and protection of tropical lands to strategically conserve threatened species. Initially known as World Parks Endowment, the organization later became World Land Trust-US before finally adopting its current name in 2013 to better reflect its mission.
Work and Impact
Rainforest Trust works with local partners to develop projects aimed at securing vital habitats. Their approach involves establishing legally-recognized protected areas where forests and their species can continue contributing to the health of the global ecosystem. Since its inception, Rainforest Trust has protected over 52.2 million acres of land across more than 62 countries in Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific.
One of their notable achievements is the protection of the Sierra de Las Minas Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala, which safeguards critical habitat for many rare and endangered species. They have also been instrumental in creating the Madre de Dios Territorial Reserve in Peru, protecting over 2 million acres of Amazon rainforest.
